The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of several weeks, the American president started showing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger of the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to USAID is 600,000 and growing, and this week research predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – truly, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves skeptics or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically not the account of a mighty king arising; rather, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching focuses on affection for other people, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to teach the attacker; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your coat you ought to provide him your sweater also.
The obvious and clear fact that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of profound affection centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: engaging for the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. During the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Best Among Us
So I have been heartened to witness the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the best parts in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and welcome him or not?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the best about American history, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to that which renders it distinctive and beautiful, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it mean feigning the most damaging regarding America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both humility and conviction, a mixture that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
