The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will take a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most coming out each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
