Vladimir Kramnik has spoken out after the tragic passing of US chess star Daniel Naroditsky, describing the 29-year-old's demise as a tragedy while condemning critics for launching what he termed an "deeply cynical and unlawful targeted harassment" against him and his family.
Kramnik's Statement
The 50-year-old former world champion, who has faced widespread condemnation for alleging Naroditsky of online cheating lacking proof, expressed condolences but rejected any personal attacks.
"Regardless of our differences, I was the sole individual in the chess community who, observing through footage Daniel's obvious health issues a day before his death, publicly called for him to receive help," Kramnik declared. "The subsequent attempts, right after his passing, to directly link this sorrowful incident to my name … cross all boundaries of fundamental human decency."
Kramnik said his earlier calls for a review of Naroditsky's online play had been overlooked "even with substantial proof", and stated he would submit documentation to "appropriate officials". He mentioned his lawyers were preparing legal actions over "unfounded claims" that have resulted in dangers against him and his family.
Police Findings
The death of Naroditsky may have been the consequence of substance overuse and is being examined as a potential self-harm case, based on a police report released Thursday. A report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department indicates Naroditsky was discovered deceased Sunday evening and classifies the case as a "Death/suicide/overdose/Sudden/Natural Death Investigation."
"On Sunday October 19th at around 7:11 PM, officers answered an assist medic call in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the report says. "When they reached the scene, an unconscious individual was found and later pronounced deceased by a medical professional."
Community Reaction
Anger over Kramnik's conduct has dominated the chess world. Grandmaster Nakamura called his behavior "disgusting", while five-time world champion Carlsen labeled it "terrible". Indian grandmaster Nihal Sarin, who played Naroditsky in his last digital game, accused Kramnik of "taking a life", saying his self-appointed pursuit against alleged rule-breakers was ineffective and "completely unacceptable".
Grandmaster's Impact
A graduate of Stanford and former world youth champion, Naroditsky amassed over 800,000 followers on Twitch and YouTube. Known as Danya, he was celebrated for his humor, clarity and humility, becoming a prominent figure in chess's COVID-period surge. He was also one of the world's finest players under shorter time controls, finishing ninth at last year's blitz world championship in New York.
Naroditsky consistently denied the allegations but admitted the impact they had taken on his psychological well-being. "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I begin performing strongly, people assume the worst," Naroditsky remarked in his final livestream.
Organizational Statements
The International Chess Federation (Fide) announced recently it was "investigating" Kramnik's behavior. "The way Kramnik approaches it simply is unacceptable," Fide CEO Emil Sutovsky stated. The federation plans to honor Naroditsky with a memorial award.
Fide president Arkady Dvorkovich later verified that all of Kramnik's public statements about Naroditsky, before and after his death, would be referred to the federation's disciplinary body "for independent consideration".
"Life and human worth are core principles shared by all of us," Dvorkovich stressed. "Our global chess family has long respected the accomplishments of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such status brings a responsibility to uphold the principles of equity and consideration."
Loved Ones' Wish
Naroditsky's relatives have said they hope he is recalled not because of the confrontation he faced but for "the joy and inspiration he brought people every day". Magnus Carlsen called him "an asset to chess", while Nakamura referred to him as "the best of us".
