The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
