2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Boost Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster initial reveal last fall.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a distinct direction.

The president expressed that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news echoes a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to persist.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to heart and overhauled the title with a renewed direction - one that’s ready to fulfill its potential to our fans.

Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of the team. After some time of discussions, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and background in the competitive gaming field is extensive, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in welcoming Ben soon. We are all excited to persist witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.

David

Or aim high, risk it all, and hope your group can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."
